High achievers across the nation ingest tiny amounts of cannabis or microdoses of cannabis to gain an edge in performance. Arriving in the public eye in the mid 2016, microdosing is quickly becoming one of the hottest trends in marijuana. For those who want the relief of cannabis without the psychoactive impact of heavy use, they microdose. In fact, most microdosers describe the mental effects as adding a sense of ease to their daily activities. In this article HI-FI will cover some of the ins and outs of microdosing so you can decide if it’s the right approach to your medical cannabis use.
What is a microdose?
A microdose is a dose of cannabis at or slightly below a level that noticeably affects the user on physical or cognitive basis. So in practice, that barely noticeable feelings could be described as ease, lightness or flow. Since everyone experiences cannabis differently, what constitutes a microdose will vary from individual to individual. That being said, the general dosage most people consider a microdose of THC is between 2-7mg when ingested orally.
Edibles seem to be the preferred method of microdosing which makes perfect sense for several reasons! The first is ease and consistency of dose. For us who live in the States with legal medical cannabis there is ready access to edibles that are lab tested and clearly labeled at a specific cannabinoid content. Because of that, it’s a breeze to gauge exactly how much THC or CBD you’re taking with each dose. It is impossible to accurately dose cannabinoids to the milligram when smoking or vaping cannabis. The other benefit to using edibles to microdose is their longer effect. Many microdosers are looking to take the edge off their day-to-day activities. Also, the convenience of one or two tiny edibles fits more readily into their hectic schedules than sneaking off every hour or so to take a puff.
What are the benefits of microdosing cannabis?
For many, microdosing addresses an array of health issues while increasing their overall productivity, creativity and focus. Keeping consumption of cannabis low for daytime activities seems to be an effective way to get mood enhancing and health promoting benefits. For instance, it helps lower anxiety, pain relief and inflammation. Meanwhile, it avoids the lethargy, paranoia and short-term memory impairment that some users experience with high doses of THC. Many microdosers describe the feeling as light and flowy. Overall, it gives them an edge in their professions.
Interestingly, Steven Kotler’s explores this topic, using psychoactive substances to reach heightened states of cognition in his 2017 book Stealing Fire. These states of high performance dubbed “flow” are naturally attainable if certain neurotransmitters are present in the brain. One of these is the endocannabinoid anandamide. THC is very similar to anandamide and binds to the same receptors in the body, but with a more potent result. Because of this, it is entirely plausible that the use of low dose THC may be the key to entering flow states and effortlessly increasing productivity in some individuals.
